Yes, everything I’d want in a Porsche I'd never want myself in.

Really I just want rear-engine, rear drive. If I’m buying a Porsche that’s what I’m after, that’s why I’m buying it. It’s a crazy weird fun layout, it’s the whole point.

I’d take a mid-engined Cayman/Boxster

Fuck a Macan

I’m sure it’s a great car - just one I’m not overly interested in for that kind of money...

No arguments here. Geriatric hip compensation purchases  get me though.

You should be loving the Macan and Cayenne. Their existence is the reason why we get all kinds of 911, Caymans and Boxsters.

In fact, the Cayenne along with some retired Toyota engineers (look it up) could very well be the reason why  Porsche is still around.

I was definitely there for the Cayenne. I get it, doesn’t mean I have to like it. Yeah, a lot of plebs want over jacked wagons to haul their kids around without looking like Clark Griswold. The vanity that punctuates and permeates their frugality  leaves much more than contempt. Before I left Texas I went to a party where people were talking about how badass the x6 m was. I said I thought it was garbage and received blank stares. I didn’t outright say garbage, but explained my issues with it. After top gear came out with Clarkson lambasting it similarly, I heard every single one of them say the same fucking thing.

The bell curve is one helluva sonofabitch.

Yea, I agree generally. When I said loving them, I mean for their existence and financial support of Porsche, not the cars themselves.

Yeah, I get that and I agree and champion that as do you. However, within that admission, we both dream of a different world when there weren’t so many SUVs and more 911s. That is the vantage of my argument. I absolutely appreciate yours and believe we have similar dreams.

Cheers, happy motoring and beautiful squealing tires.

May I offer a very mild dissent?

My company car is a base Macan, 2.0L 4 cylinder . The only options are the sunroof and the adaptive cruise package . If you look at the car as a tall 4 cylinder AWD hatchback, or a jacked up midsize luxury sedan, it’s a damned good one, and not a bad price.

A Golf R is now low 40s and a base Macan is high 40s, although you’ll never see a Macan at a dealer under the low 50s. The Macan has a much nicer interior and more luxury options that make up the $ 10k difference no matter the manufacturer. (A lthough in typical Porsche option fashion , no CarPlay unless you upgrade. )

Would I buy one myself? Probably not , I would - and many someday will - spend my money on a manual Golf R. Would I recommend the Macan to someone looking for a luxury crossover ? Would I buy one if something forced me into an automatic trans small SUV ? Abso-freaking-lutey.

No, they don’t drive like a sports car , but they drive great for what they are and are a kind of entry drug for Porsche: A car that, if you stay away from the crazy option list, is priced like  other luxury SUVs, handles and stops (seriously, the brakes, holy crap) better than the competition, gets people into their dealerships a nd puts a Porsche salesperson in their contact list. As others have pointed out, SUVs saved Porsche. I’ll go farther and say that the SUVs, maybe particularly the Macan, continue to do much to sell Caymans and 911s (and Panameras and Cayennes).
